2025 Oscars host Conan O’Brien has revealed how the hilarious bit between him and Adam Sandler came about, saying it was all Adam's idea during an interview with ET .

During O’Brien's monologue, he singled his old friend out, who was "dressed like a guy playing video poker at 2 a.m." Sandler was quick to turn the tables on the host, asking if his "snazzy gym shorts and fluffy sweatshirt" really offended him enough to mock him in front of his peers? O’Brien quickly apologized, but it was too late. Sandler jokingly stormed out of the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, but not before going over to Best Actor nominee Timothée Chalamet to shout "Chalamet" and hug him.

This is a fun throwback to this year's Golden Globe awards when host Nikki Glaser asked to get a "Chalamet" from the comedian during her opening monologue. Glaser actually reacted to the moment while on Live with Kelly and Mark 's "After the Oscars Show."

That was the joke I made at the Golden Globes! So I saw like, a callback to my joke and I was watching it, like, [gasp]. It was so awesome.

O’Brien originally wrote an idea to do with Sandler, but when he called him up to share it, Sandler had another idea for their back and forth interaction.

It involved him dressing in the way that he’s most comfortable, which of course was his idea because he doesn’t want to put on a tux. And then, his idea was so great. I mean, that was all Adam. Adam’s the king.

Funny enough, Sandler was recently seen in black tie attire at SNL 50: The Anniversary Special in New York on February 16. "It's a terrible feeling," he told Variety , however, he didn't want to let Al Franken down by wearing a sweatshirt.

Moral of the story, if you're writing your opening award show monologue, make sure to include Sandler.
