Instead of competing against his brother on Wednesday night, Washington Capitals goaltender Charlie Lindgren dedicated the win to him.

Lindgren backstopped the Capitals to a 3-2 overtime win against the New York Rangers — the same team that recently traded his brother Ryan Lindgren.

“It felt good to get the win for my brother and, obviously, for the team here,” Charlie said to reporters following the victory. “My brother laid it on the line every single night for this team. He loved being a Ranger, loved the group over there. I know for a fact they are definitely going to miss him. There’s going to be a big hole back there.”

The Rangers traded Ryan on Saturday, along with Jimmy Vesey, to the Colorado Avalanche. The defenceman had been subject to trade rumours nearly all season long, and, as a pending free agent, those rumours picked up once it became clear that the Rangers’ spot in the playoffs was by no means a foregone conclusion.

“You kind of always see the rumours, especially this time of year. I saw my name floating around, so yeah, definitely thought that was a possibility,” Ryan told reporters in Colorado when asked about the trade.

“New York, yeah, was definitely up and down. There was a lot of stuff going on. It’s a new chapter (in Colorado).”

Lindgren spent the entirety of his career in New York after the Boston Bruins selected him in the second round of the 2016 draft. In total, the 27-year-old racked up 387 games with the Rangers over seven seasons.
