Donald Trump has threatened to intensify the trade war after Canada announced retaliatory tariffs against the United States.

As of Tuesday, all Canadian and Mexican imports will be subject to a 25% U.S. tariff.

Following Justin Trudeau’s announcement that Canada would respond with its own tariffs, Donald Trump took to Truth Social, warning that U.S. tariffs would increase further if Canada follows through.

"Please explain to Governor Trudeau, of Canada, that when he puts on a Retaliatory Tariff on the US, our Reciprocal Tariff will immediately increase by a like amount!" he wrote.

The U.S. president once again referred to Justin Trudeau as the "Governor" of Canada, reviving his long-standing suggestion that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States.

During a press conference, Justin Trudeau responded by accusing Donald Trump of wanting to see Canada’s economy collapse, suggesting that such a scenario would make it easier for the U.S. to annex the country.
